With Mings going off balance he took a step forward but stamped on the face of Oliveira, though the full-back escaped without any punishment as the stomp looked accidental.

Oliveira was forced to depart from the game as he suffered bleeding from his face - with Yakou Méïté replacing the Portuguese forward.

After the 0-0 draw, Mings reacted to the result and the incident as he apologised for the unfortunate incident.

Mings tweeted: “Absolutely loved wearing the claret and blue today and over the moon with the clean sheet! @AVFCOfficial.

“Feel awfully sorry to Oliveira, I hope he is ok.”

Mings made his Villa debut today, after signing on loan from Bournemouth.

Villa beat the likes of Nottingham Forest, Derby and West Brom to the signing of the 25-year-old.

Mings played the full 90 minutes on his debut, which will likely be remembered for the stamp on Oliveira.

It is, however, not the first time Mings has been involved in a stamping incident.

In March 2017 Mings stamped on then Manchester United star Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

The pair clashed again later in the game as Ibrahimovic elbowed Mings during the next passage of play - which landed the Swede a three-game ban.

Mings maintained his innocence but that did not stop him from being hit with a five game ban.

The Bournemouth left-back was charged with violent conduct in relation to the incident - which was not seen by the match officials at the time but caught on video.
