Now Gunners boss Unai Emery is reportedly ready to cut his losses on the 26-year-old to help him splash out on his squad once the season finishes.

say Arsenal are prepared to make the former Sampdoria centre-back available for a move in the next transfer window.

Mustafi's plight has not been helped by injures but he has regularly been fiercely criticised when fit.

Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher tore into the 20-cap international after Sunday's 3-1 defeat at champions Manchester City.

Ex-Liverpool hero Carragher named Mustafi as one of two huge weak-links in Arsenal's backline.

He said: "Stephan Lichtsteiner is not good enough.

“Maybe you could argue that’s because of his age and the fella next to him Shkodran Mustafi has never been good enough since the day he walked through the door and that’s why all the goals came down there.

“To see Arsenal defend like that really, there’s a big job here for Unai Emery to do.”

The Gunners reportedly rejected a bid from Inter Milan to borrow Mustafi for all of last season.

And this term - Emery's first after succeeding Arsene Wenger - sixth-placed Arsenal have again looked creaky at the back, conceding 36 goals in 25 Premier League games.
