Bernardo said: “The race is on. Mentally, it is a big boost for us. A few days ago, we thought we had lost the Premier League.

“But now we are top, even if it’s because we have played one game more.”

City head second-placed Liverpool thanks to a superior goal difference.

But just eight days earlier they had been written off in the aftermath of a shock 2-1 defeat at Newcastle.

City were initially unhappy when the Premier League decided they should play their game at Goodison Park this week.

But now it is out of the way — with three more points in the bag — City are delighted.

Portuguese midfielder Bernardo, 24, added: “It puts pressure on Liverpool and Tottenham.

“After Newcastle, we were sad because we thought we had lost the league.

“Fortunately, Liverpool drew against Leicester and that gave us hope.

“Then there was another draw against West Ham and that means the race is on.”

City’s return to the top may be short lived as Liverpool could reclaim pole position when they face Bournemouth tomorrow.

Just 24 hours later, Pep Guardiola’s men host Chelsea.

Bernardo said: “We are not only playing one of the best sides in the Premier League but in the world.”
