Emiliano Sala’s No9 shirt retired by Nantes in touching tribute after plane crash death
NANTES have retired the their No9 shirt in a touching tribute to Emiliano Sala after his death was confirmed yesterday.
The Ligue 1 side released a statement this morning after it was revealed the body found in a crashed plane in the Channel this week was Sala's.
The footballing world has been paying tribute to the much-loved Argentine, with Nantes willing to go above and beyond with a remarkable gesture.
Nantes president Waldermar Kita said: "I don't have the words. It's a tragedy. I'm crushed.
"Emiliano left his mark. That's why, like many fans, I wish to honour him by retiring the No9."
Shortly after, Nantes wrote on Twitter: "Because Emiliano Sala will forever be part of the legend that have written the great story of Nantes FC, the No9 he wore is retired."
Meanwhile, a Nantes statement today read: "Nantes had the immense sadness on Thursday to learn that the body found was that of Emiliano Sala.
"There are difficult mornings, nightmarish awakenings, where the unhappy reality hits us. Emi is gone...
"Sala knew how to win the hearts of the Nantes supporters.
"With his work, desire and kindness without limits, he finished as the club's top scorer in his three seasons.
"The homages paid to him match the player and the person he was. Today, we have lost a friend, a talented players and an exemplary team-mate.

"We can't forget in this drama the pilot and his family and have confidence the authorities will continue their search.
"Nantes, its board, staff and players wish to pass the families of Emiliano Sala and David Ibbotson their deepest condolences.
"We will never forget you Emi. 'He's an Argentine who never gives up, Emiliano Sala, Emiliano Sala...'"
Earlier today, it was revealed Cardiff could face a transfer ban if they fail to pay the first £5million of Sala's £15m fee to Nantes.
In more poignant news, Nantes removed tragically hauled down their "keep hope" sign from their Sala tribute.
