POLICE have claimed no Southampton fans were arrested yesterday for their sick Emiliano Sala taunts and are unsure if law was broken.

Saints have vowed to ban three fans ejected from their game with Cardiff after they performed plane gestures in the stands.

The vile stunt came just days after it was confirmed Sala had died in a plane crash over the Channel.

Cops added they are working with the club to investigate whether any criminal offences have been committed.

Referring to the situation surrounding the sick taunts, a police spokesperson told SunSport: "There is no update currently.

"Just to clarify there were three people the club ejected over this incident.

"No arrests [were made] and the men have not been questioned at this stage.

"We are working with the club to investigate and see if any criminal offences have been committed.

"We will then decide, if so, on the appropriate action."

Cardiff left it late to clinch a dramatic win over Southampton in their first game since the tragic update on Sala.

Southampton 1-2 Cardiff: Kenneth Zohore scores the winner in emotional match at St Mary's

And after the game, Southampton released a statement slamming the disrespectful actions on an otherwise emotional afternoon of tributes.

The club wrote: “Southampton Football Club can confirm that two fans were detained and had their details taken by police during our match against Cardiff City on Saturday.

“The club will continue to work with Hampshire Police to identify any individuals deemed to have made indecent gestures towards Cardiff supporters.

“Such behaviour has no place in our game and will not be tolerated at St Mary’s.

"The club will be taking an extremely firm stance against anyone involved and intends to ban those supporters identified.”

Kenneth Zohore netted a dramatic winner for Bluebirds on the south coast as Neil Warnock's jumped up to 16th in the table.

Speaking after the match, Warnock said: "We wanted to do it for Emiliano and I'm really proud the lads have done him justice."

While Sol Bamba - who also netted against Southampton - said: "It’s been a tough couple of weeks.

"I know Emiliano Sala was looking from up there so it's good to get the three points."

Sala's body was recovered from the wreckage of the light aircraft off the coast of Alderney in the English Channel earlier in the week.

Over £325,000 was raised to help continue the search for Sala and pilot David Ibbotson.

Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe were among those who donated money towards the private mission.

Meanwhile, Cardiff fans want the club to retire a number so supporters can buy tribute shirts to help raise fund for Sala's family.

His former side Nantes have retired the No9 jersey in honour of the Argentinian striker - and all players will wear "Sala" shirts for their Ligue 1 clash today.
