Fears Alexis Sanchez will miss rest of season with knee ligament damage – but dreadful form means Man Utd can cope

MANCHESTER UNITED star Alexis Sanchez could miss the rest of the season over fears he suffered knee ligament damage during the 3-2 win against Southampton.

The 30-year-old was forced off in the 52nd minute at Old Trafford following a challenge from Saints defender Jan Bednarek.

And the ex-Arsenal ace could now miss up to eight weeks of the campaign, though his form for the Red Devils suggests his absence may not be felt.

Speaking of the two-time Copa America winner, Chile's national team physio told El Mercurio: "We spoke to the player and [on Sunday] he had scans on the injury.

"He will be available for the Copa America, but he will be unavailable to play for between six and eight weeks.

"The medial ligament strain is an annoying injury but not such a complex one."

Sanchez has been a massive disappointment for United since moving from the Gunners in January 2018.

He has chipped in with just one goal in the Premier League this term, the winner against Newcastle on October 6.

The former Barcelona man has been used in a rotation system under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, with the Norwegian understood to have no faith in the player.

It has also been claimed that United are willing to listen to offers for Sanchez in the summer.

The likes of Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard have all thrived since Solskjaer replaced Jose Mourinho.

And Romelu Lukaku has netted doubles in back-to-back games as he looks to force his way into a regular starting spot.

With Sanchez facing a considerable amount of time on the sidelines, he may find himself completely overlooked once he gets back to full fitness.
