OLE GUNNAR SOLSKJAER blamed the worst performance of his reign for Manchester United’s FA Cup exit.

Wolves totally outplayed the lacklustre Red Devils in the second half and reached their first FA Cup semi final for 21 years thanks to goals by Raul Jimenez and Diogo Jota.

And Solskjaer admitted: “It was a big step backwards. That’s the poorest performance since I’ve come here. The lack of urgency going forward, lack of forward passing, lack of regains.”

After interim boss Solskjaer’s sensational start at Old Trafford, United have crashed to earth with two defeats in seven days — this blow coming after losing 2-0 at Arsenal in the league.

The Norwegian added: “Last week we were happy with the performance.

“We got what we deserved today because we never deserved to win this game.”

There have been strong rumours that Solskjaer will be given the United job permanently during the international break.

And the 46-year-old pledged that he and his players would come back fighting.

He said: “We’ve got so much to play for.

“Manchester United, in April and May, always find our form.

“We can’t wait for the challenge for third.

“It will be nice when Barcelona come. We have so many highlights to look forward to.”

This victory under the lights at a pulsating Molineux brought back memories of the club’s glory years.

Wolves manager Nuno Espirito Santo said: “It means a lot because we know how big Wolves were in the 1950s and 1960s and there are people in the stadium who have memories of that.

“To give them back this joy, and to see people going out with a smile — and a lot of beer — was good.

“To try to achieve the same is much harder now but we will try.

“I’m very proud of the players.

“We had composure, shape, good running. Very well done to the boys.

“We achieved this with the amazing support of our fans. The noise was fantastic. We did it together.”

Skipper Conor Coady is also looking towards a bright future.

The defender, 26, said: “We have phenomenal players going forward.

“And this win, taking us to Wembley, its amazing.

“Two years ago this club was in a bad place, now we go to Wembley and our fans will follow us. It’s an amazing achievement.”

Scorer Jimenez said: “It was an incredible night.

“We knew we could do it and make special things here and that’s it, we are in the semi-finals and we are very happy.”
