Herrera, 29, is out of contract at the end of the season and looked set to stay at Old Trafford after playing a big part in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer turning around the club’s fortunes.

But PSG have swooped to snatch the Spaniard on a deal that will see him land £150,000-a-week over a three-year deal.

United had progressed with talks over extending the contract of the player they bought from Athletic Bilbao for £29million five years ago.

But PSG are able to offer a huge package as they are not paying a transfer fee.

Losing Herrera would be one of the first blows to Solskjaer, who has seen Anthony Martial commit to the club after looking like he could leave under Jose Mourinho.

Solskjaer used him regularly until a hip injury ruled him out for three weeks, with his return coming before the international break against Wolves.

PSG have been in the hunt for a central midfielder and failed with a bid to land Everton’s Idrissa Gueye in the January transfer window.
