Georgia hero stuck hand into Schar’s mouth to stop him swallowing his tongue as Newcastle star reveals ‘I can’t remember anything’ after being knocked out

A nasty clash of heads led to a dangerous situation that was thankfully avoided by Jano Ananidze's quick thinking

FABIAN SCHAR has admitted that he ‘couldn’t remember anything’ after an opposition player was forced to react fast to stop the defender swallowing his tongue.

A sickening collision with Jemal Tabidze in Switzerland’s Euro 2020 qualifier against Georgia knocked Schar unconscious.

The incident occurred in the 24th minute of Saturday’s match

As he lay flat on his back, Jano Ananidze realised the choking danger the centre-back was in and inserted his hand into Schar’s move to prevent him from swallowing his tongue.

In spite of football’s increased sensitivity to head injuries, the Newcastle United star played on after receiving treatment but admits the blow took its toll.

“It looks awful, I can’t remember anything,” he remarked to Swiss newspaper Blick after watching the footage back.

“I was out for a few seconds. My skull is still humming.

“And I’ve got neck ache and a bruise on my forehead.

“But it was worth it.”

Georgia defender Tabidze was also patched up and played on despite the 24th-minute clash leaving a gash on his head.

Premier League referee Craig Pawson was the man in the middle as Switzerland came out 2-0 winners in Tbilsi.

Newcastle fans now await whether Schar will be ruled out of their trip to Arsenal on April 1 as a result of this injury – the defender has become a fan favourite for his commitment and penchant for a wonder goal.
