McTominay shines as Young struggles at centre-back in Man Utd defeat to Wolves

Scottish midfielder scored his first goal for the club as he outshone big-money signings Paul Pogba and Fred

SCOTT McTOMINAY proved money isn't everything as he outshone Fred and Paul Pogba in midfield.

But individual blunders cost Manchester United, with Ashley Young seeing red and Chris Smalling scoring an own-goal in a 2-1 defeat against Wolves.

David De Gea

Put Fred under pressure in build-up to Wolves' first. Failed to pick up a lose ball in his area - giving Raul Jimenez a chance to get a ball in the box. Great save to prevent a second Smalling own-goal at end.

Diogo Dalot

Teed-up Lukaku with brilliant first-half cross that the Belgian should have finished. Looks to have a bright future.

Ashley Young

Fred and De Gea will take the blame for the first goal but Young looked a converted winger playing in defence when he played Jota onside. Sent off for two sloppy bookings.

Chris Smalling

Was playing well at the heart of a back three until he was unlucky to prod into his own net under pressure from Wolves players. Almost scored a late second in his own net which would have completed a miserable night.

Luke Shaw

Caught napping a few times at the back, particularly to let Jimenez through, but a wiling runner down the left and one of United's biggest threats.

McTominay

Bagged his first United goal in his 41st game for the club. Almost had a second with a diving header pushed away by Rui Patricio.

Fred

Showed both sides of his game as he set up McTominay before giving the ball away for Wolves to reply.

Paul Pogba

Still has a habit of going missing at times despite his improvement. Undoubtedly a talented player but must use that ability to control games more often. Scuffed left-footed effort at end summed it up.

Jesse Lingard

Missed a huge chance to make it 2-0 when left unmarked only to aim a tame header at goal.

Romelu Lukaku

Should have scored from Dalot's early cross. Put in a great ball for Lingard to highlight his creativity.

Subs

Phil Jones - beaten in air in the build-up as Wolves went ahead.

Anthony Martial - Did not see much of the ball with his side down to 10 men.

Andreas Pereira - On too late to maker an impact.
