MANCHESTER UNITED have launched a £90million world-record bid for Napoli centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly, reports in Italy say.
Old Trafford boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could shatter the current highest fee for a defender, the £75m Liverpool paid for Southampton's Virgil van Dijk.
Solskjaer has also been monitoring Real Madrid's French World Cup winner Raphael Varane, 25, and Tottenham's Belgium star Toby Alderweireld, 30.
But Koulibaly is now thought to be Solskjaer's main defensive target as he attempts to build a squad good enough to challenge for the Premier League title next season.
The 27-year-old signed a new Napoli contract last summer until 2023.
And Tribal Football say the deal has a £129m release clause.

But Solskjaer is determined to find the best long-term solution - and Koulibably could be easier to lure than Varane, who Real chief Zinedine Zidane expects to stay.
The Independent reported last week that Koulibaly split with his agent Bruno Satin to be looked after by his brother as he seeks a move away.
The ex-Genk and Metz powerhouse said recently: "I am pleased that many teams follow me.
"But I want to demonstrate on the field that I am at the level of the greatest."
