The Ivory Coast centre-back suffered the devastating injury midway through the second half against Chelsea when he challenged Mateo Kovacic.

Bailly’s right knee was put in a straight brace before he left Old Trafford and he will be scanned on Monday - and expects anterior cruciate ligament damage to be confirmed.

That would rule him out until at least late this year and will rule out a move to Arsenal, who were ready to move for him this summer.

Kovacic’s weight fell onto Bailly’s knee as the Croatian midfielder fell from a foul by Ander Herrera.

Bailly’s knee was too swollen for scanning immediately which is why he will get the full assessment on Monday.

It was Bailly's first appearance since he was taken off before half-time during the Champions League clash against Paris Saint-Germain.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer strongly defends criticism of David de Gea after another Man Utd mistake costs them vital points

Boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said: “He will need a scan tomorrow but I don’t think it’s the worst knee injury you can have.

“He will be out for the rest of the season. I don’t think we will see him again before next season.

“But he is a warrior, he played well today, he was calm, he was composed and it was just unfortunate that he had to come off.”
