ANDREW ROBERTSON can consider himself lucky to escape a red card after striking Lionel Messi on the head during Liverpool's clash with Barcelona.

With the Reds needing to overturn a 3-0 first-leg deficit at Anfield, emotions appeared to be running high.

And Liverpool left-back Robertson appeared to make contact with the Argentine superstar in the opening exchanges of the huge game.

Robertson pushed the back of Messi's head as he sat on the turf in a completely unnecessary incident.

Fans have taken to Twitter to vent their frustration at the incident - and even Piers Morgan has had his say.

Morgan wrote "Robertson roughing up Messi's hair in the first minute may not have been the smartest move..."

SEEING RED

One fan added: "Robertson should be sent off, ridiculous from the LB."

Another claimed: "What is Andy Robertson angry at Messi for? Y'all not even in the same tax or skill bracket."

Here's how Twitter reacted to the shove...

Mark Halsey on Liverpool vs Barcelona

ROBERTSON ON MESSI...

You could argue Andy Robertson should have been sent off for pushing Lionel Messi in the head.

The rule of thumb for a referee is if you strike an opponent above the neck then it is a red card offence.

Referee Cuneyt Cakir did not see the incident early in the game at Anfield. But Robertson is a very lucky boy that the video assistant referee Felix Zwayer did not see it as violent conduct.

What on earth was he doing?I'm very surprised VAR official Zwayer did not recommend Cakir to review the incident.

MANE PENALTY...

I did not think Liverpool should have been awarded a first half penalty.

Sadio Mane goes down very easily but it is a coming together between the Liverpool forward and Sergi Roberto. I felt Cakir got it spot on by waving play on.

SUAREZ ON ROBERTSON...

Luis Suarez definitely takes a kick at Robertson. It is not a natural running action from the Barcelona forward.

He kicks out at him and it's petulance.I don't think it is an act of violent conduct so therefore I wouldn't have given Suarez a red card.

It would be a yellow card for me at most for unsporting behaviour.

The VAR team must have agreed because they do not get involved on yellow card offences.
