Lampard replacing Sarri ‘understandable’ if Chelsea are hit with transfer ban, says Blues legend Hasselbaink

Sarri's future remains uncertain at Stamford Bridge and it could be a summer of change

JIMMY FLOYD HASSELBAINK is backing Frank Lampard to become the new Chelsea boss if they fail to overturn their transfer ban.

The Blues are facing two windows without being able to sign players after being found guilty of 29 breaches of regulations over transferring minors.

It means Chelsea are braced to hand a host of opportunities to their young stars who have spent the season out on loan.

Mason Mount, Tammy Abraham, Reece James and Kurt Zouma are just some of the names who could be introduced.

Owner Roman Abramovich is also considering the future of current boss Maurizio Sarri and will make a decision following the Europa League final next Wednesday.

And ex-Chelsea striker Hasselbaink believes his former team-mate and current Derby boss would be the right man to take the club forward.

He told : "If Chelsea get a transfer ban, I can see why they’d go for Frank Lampard.

"But let’s not forget there’s a manager in place at the moment who hasn’t had a bad year. It’s been difficult, but not bad.

I can understand why they want to go for him

"If they hire Frank, they will need to give him time. But I can understand why they want to go for him, and he’s with former Chelsea youth coach Jody Morris who knows all of the young players. They would need to give him time to implement his way.”

Chelsea are braced to appeal against their Fifa ban which was initially imposed in February.

And if they can avoid the likely punishment then Hasselbaink insists Chelsea should raid Crystal Palace for two of their stars.

He added: "If Chelsea don’t have a transfer ban, I think they’ll target two Crystal Palace players. Firstly, Aaron Wan-Bissaka can push Cesar Azpilicueta for a starting place and will learn a lot from him. He’s a very good right back, and can defend very well.

"And then Wilfried Zaha brings the excitement. If Eden Hazard goes, you need somebody to take players on.

"Yes, they have Calum Hudson-Odoi but any good side needs four wide players, especially if something happens to Pedro or Willian. I think it will be difficult for Crystal Palace to keep them, with all due respect.

"If they’re going to go, I think it’s best for them to stay in London. Yes, Wilfried Zaha had a difficult move to Man United that didn’t work out so I think it’d be good for him to stay in London.”
