Real Madrid hit back at Pochettino and accuse Spurs boss of lying over ‘refusal to allow them to stay at training ground’
Argentian had stated that his side's bid to stay at the club's facilities before the Champions League final had been rejected by president Florentino Perez himself
REAL MADRID have hit back at Mauricio Pochettino's claim that his side were denied permission to stay at their training ground ahead of the Champions League final.
Los Blancos issued a strong statement where they accuse the Spurs boss of lying by revealing all requests received by president Florentino Perez have been accepted.
The North London side will use the Valdebebas training complex next week ahead of the crunch clash against Liverpool at Atletico’s Wanda Metropolitano stadium.
But Pochettino had stated that their bid to stay at the training ground’s hotel – which is used by Zinedine Zidane’s side during the Spanish season – was rejected.
In an interview with El Partidazo de COPE, he said: “We asked but Florentino wouldn't let us. He'd say, 'the day you coach Madrid is the day you can sleep there'.”
However, the claim has sparked a furious response from the La Liga giants who dismissed the Argentian's accusations as "completely false".
Real Madrid CF wants to make it clear that it is outright false that this request was made
A statement read: “Real Madrid CF is surprised by the comments made by the coach of Tottenham Hotspur, Mauricio Pochettino, about a supposed request made to our club so that his team could stay in the residence of the Real Madrid City on the occasion of the final of the Champions League.
"Real Madrid wants to make it clear it is completely false this request occurred.
"All requests have referred only to the use of the training pitches and changing rooms. And all of them have been granted by our club."
Spurs travel to Madrid on Wednesday and will train at Valdebebas for the next two days before facing Liverpool on June 1, who will also practice there that morning.
The escalating feud threatens to sour relations between Pochettino and the La Liga side, who have long been linked with attempts to snare the boss from North London.
Real Madrid's statement in full
Real Madrid C. F. is surprised with the statements made by the manager of Tottenham Hotspur, Mauricio Pochettino, on an alleged request made to our club for his team to stay in the residence of Real Madrid City on the occasion of the Champions League Final.
Real Madrid C. F. wants to make clear that it is categorically false that this request was produced. Our club has always shown its absolute availability to attend to all the requests made by Uefa, the Spanish Football Federation, Club Atlético Madrid, Liverpool FC and Tottenham Hotspur.
All requests to Real Madrid have made reference only and exclusively to the use of the training camps of Real Madrid City and its changing rooms. And all of them have been granted by our club.
Thus, Liverpool plans to train at our facilities on Saturday, June 1st in the morning. Tottenham, on the other hand, will do so on Thursday, May 30th and Friday, May 31st.
Real Madrid C. F. also wants to emphasise that the housing of the finalist teams in the Champions League are assigned by Uefa following criteria of organisation and security. And that at no time has it been requested to our club that these teams could stay in the facilities of Real Madrid City.
The fierce statement appears to also have been ill-thought out, with Pochettino apparently joking when he was asked where his team would stay in Madrid.
A clue to this would be that any communication between the two clubs about such a request would be highly unlikely to have gone through president Perez.
Pochettino, who has four years left on his contract, has previously hinted he could leave Spurs if they win the European Cup for the first time in their history.
However, he admitted Jurgen Klopp's Reds are the favourites because of their superior financial backing despite both sides overcoming dramatic semi-final victories.
He said: “Liverpool are the favourites as they have invested lots of money.
“Liverpool’s plan was to win the Premier League and the Champions League. Tottenham’s plan was to have the best season in our history.
“Our plan wasn’t to win the Champions League even though it sounds tough, our plan was to finish the stadium.”
