Tranmere supporters wear Mike Dean masks in honour of ref superfan ahead of Wembley play-off final

TRANMERE supporters hilariously donned Mike Dean masks in honour of their refereeing superfan on their way to Wembley.

The Wirral-based club take on Newport this afternoon in the League Two play-off final.

And Micky Mellon's men will be cheered on by thousands of celebrity refs in the capital.

We just hope the stewards are keeping a close eye on the real Deano following his antics during the semi-final win over Forest Green Rovers.

The Premier League whistler grabbed the headlines - just for a change - with his over-exuberant celebrations.

Standing on a terrace railing, he punched the air, shouted then gave it large to the away fans while those around him celebrated in the way most fans do.

A video doing the rounds of social media this morning showed a coach-load of Tranmere supporters - rather terrifyingly - all wearing masks of a smirking Dean, complete with his refereeing mic.

ROAD TO WEMBLEY

Coaches no doubt set off early this morning for the four-hour, 217-mile journey from Prenton Park to Wembley.

Tranmere can secure their place in the third tier of English football for the first time since 2014 with victory this afternoon.

And they certainly have the added bonus of playing - and winning - a play-off final at the national stadium just 12 months ago.

Strikes from Andy Cook and this season's 32-goal top-scorer James Norwood secured a victory over Boreham Wood, despite being reduced to ten men in the first minute.

Newport, meanwhile, are hoping to return to the third division after 32 years - just before the club collapsed in the late 1980s.

The Exiles won at Wembley in the 2013 Conference play-off final and have experience of competing in big matches in recent years.

As well as pushing Manchester City close for 75 minutes and Spurs to a replay, they have dumped out the likes of Middlesbrough, Leeds and most notably Leicester in the FA Cup over the last two seasons.

But they face a tough task today, especially with thousands of Mike Deans enough to put even the most focused of players off.
