Dundee United apologise for Twitter and Facebook hack after shocking posts during play-off final defeat
Club forced to delete official account after hackers posted sectarian abuse
DUNDEE UNITED have apologised for their official Twitter and Facebook accounts being hacked during the Premiership play-off final.
The first of the hacked tweets appeared on United's account midway their penalty shoot-out defeat to St Mirren last night.
The bizarre messages read: "mon the rangers"
One tweet also explicitly said: "F*** the pope"
Two hackers appeared to take credit for the hack as the account posted: "Me n big Cammy boi running a mock.
"Happening troops it's me messiah"
They then shared a picture promoting 'the best hacker in Glasgow'.
A statement released on their confirmed: "Unfortunately, Dundee United's social media accounts on Twitter and Facebook were both hacked during the Premiership play-off final second leg and remain offline while the club investigates the breach.
"We want to apologise for any offence that was caused by the content that was posted.
"The accounts will remain offline, and we apologise for any inconvenience this may cause. We are planning to be back online as soon as possible."
The account's last post read: "Account been compromised. We are working on a solution."
The club media account was deleted after the sectarian abuse continued on the verified account.
