Alonso's role at Stamford Bridge diminished towards the end of the season, but the Baku snub was reportedly the final straw for the Spaniard.

And report that he has given Atletico the green light as Diego Simeone is looking for a new left-back.

Rojiblancos star Lucas Hernandez is already joining Bayern Munich this summer.

And veteran Felipe Luis will most likely follow suit and leave Wanda Metropolitano before the beginning of next season.

Atletico contacted Alonso, 28, two months ago, but his salary expectations reportedly put the La Liga giants off.

But their interest has reignited as the Spaniard now wants to return to his hometown and believes he could enjoy regular football under Simeone.

Atletico are believed to be the only La Liga side the Chelsea ace is willing to play for - despite coming through the youth ranks at Real Madrid.

But the Blues' financial demands could throw a spanner in the works in the Spanish giants' pursuit of Alonso.

Chelsea have the upper hand in negotiations as the full-back signed a new five-year deal back in October.

In addition, the transfer ban Fifa slapped on the London side means they will most likely be unable to sign a replacement.

Therefore, Atletico would have to come with a mind-blowing offer in order to convince Stamford Bridge chiefs to sanction the deal.
