VIRGIL VAN DIJK and Georginio Wijnaldum were given a hero's reception when they joined up with Holland's national team camp.

Following their Champions League triumph with Liverpool, the pair headed to Portugal for their country's Nations League semi-final against England.

The whole squad awaited their arrival in the hotel reception late on Monday night.

As they entered the room they were greeted by loud cheers and a round of applause.

Among the first to welcome the Liverpool stars were Ryan Babel and Memphis Depay, the former Manchester United winger breaking out into a chant for Wijnaldum to the tune of Kungs' This Girl.

Ajax defender Matthis de Ligt, who so nearly made the final himself, clapped along while coach Ronald Koeman waited in the background to embrace the duo.

Like Reds team-mates Jordan Henderson, Joe Gomez and Trent Alexander-Arnold, they have little time to prepare for the Nations League.

The same can be said for Tottenham's handful of players heading to Gareth Southgate's squad; Danny Rose, Dele Alli, Eric Dier and fitness doubt Harry Kane.

England meet the Netherlands in Guimaraes on Thursday night with both the final and third-place play-off taking place on Sunday.

The semi-finals kick off when Portugal face Switzerland in Porto on Wednesday, although none of the players involved in that game featured in Madrid.

Goals from Mohamed Salah and Divock Origi secured a 2-0 win for Liverpool - and their sixth European Cup.
