The Red Devils are set to announce the former Shrewsbury Town loanee as their first signing of the summer imminently after a fee was finally agreed.

James was given permission to temporarily leave Wales' squad at their base near Chester ahead of his country's Euro 2020 qualifier in Croatia on Saturday.

He was spotting arriving at United's HQ around 7:30 am before he was later pictured clutching his washbag at Liverpool airport as he rejoined his international team-mates.

Giggs will fly out with his squad to Osijek to face the World Cup finalists on the back of James’ winning goal against Slovakia in Group E.

United and Swansea have been locked in negotiations for weeks, but the sudden interest of Monaco forced the Old Trafford club to speed up proceedings.

The Wales international was close to agreeing a move to Manchester last month before the tragic passing of his father Kavan.

James missed Wales' training camp in Portugal last week after he was given time to grieve by the boss Giggs.

The United legend recommended the youngster to his former club with former teammate Ole Gunnar Solskjaer keen to recruit young British talent.

James had come close to signing for Leeds in the January transfer window before a deal collapsed, giving Premier League clubs the chance to swoop.

The pacy star went on to prove instrumental in the 3-1 win over Stoke in April which is when Solskjaer hardened his interest in him.

Former Swansea man Joe Allen, who featured that day with Stoke, admitted that game proved to him that James was ready to make the step up to the Prem.

The former Liverpool midfielder said: "There, that was the day that probably sealed the potential Man United move. He was electric.

"He scored and got two men sent off and caused carnage all game.

"It was one of the best individual performances I have ever seen as a fellow player."
