ENGLAND went from elation to despair on another night where VAR made all the headlines.
Sub Jesse Lingard thought he had won it for Gareth Southgate's men with just seven minutes of normal time to go when he slotted home Ross Barkley's through-ball for 2-1.
But video technology was called upon, and judged the Manchester United man to be the shortest of whisker's offside.
And with the game headed into extra-time at 1-1, John Stones and Ross Barkley lost their heads and Holland triumphed 3-1.
Stones stumbled on the ball in the first half of extra-time which led to Quincy Promes shooting at Kyle Walker's leg for an own-goal.
And then in the second period Stones played a foolish ball to Barkley, and he got the pass back to Jordan Pickford totally wrong.
In nipped Memphis Depay to play in Promes who this time got the goal his positivity from the bench deserved.
And things had started so well for England in Guimaraes.
Marcus Rashford was clumsily fouled in the box by wonderkid Matthijs De Ligt on the half-hour mark.
RASHFORD INJURED
The Manchester United man dusted himself down to easily beat Jasper Cillessen in the Dutch goal.
But his night didn't end as he would have wished - being replaced at half-time by Harry Kane after looking to have injured his leg.
But De Ligt made amends by powering home a 73rd minute header to even things up.
Then came the late drama when England thought they had won it in normal time through Lingard.
But referee Clement Turpin consulted VAR and the goal was ruled out for the most marginal of toes offside.
And technology was called on just one minute later, when it correctly ruled out a Holland penalty as the ball brushed Ben Chilwell's back and NOT his hand.
It was back and forth as the game went into extra-time, with Kane looking to get some change out of De Ligt and the beast that is Virgil Van Dijk.
Promes, meanwhile, was lively from the flank, with Depay also unsettling the England back line.
But England were their own worst enemy when Harry Maguire passed along the backline to Stones.
He turned abysmally and lost the ball. Depay's shot was palmed away by Pickford but Promes nipped in to hit off Walker's leg and in.
But the errors weren't quite finished there.
With six minutes to go, Stones fizzed in a ball to Barkley, his pass back to Pickford was way off, and Depay squared for Promes to get the goal he deserved.
Holland will now play Portugal in the Nations League final, while England face Switzerland in the third place play-off.
