But the shirt was left vacant after Nolito exited City after just one season at the club.

Transfer speculation surrounded Jesus, who was first handed the N.33 when he signed for the club.

City, however, wanted to show their commitment to Jesus, who still hit 21 goals in 46 games in all competitions last term despite playing second fiddle to Sergio Aguero.

Guardiola have tried to show that Jesus remains a key part of their plans and the No9 shirt was part of that gesture.

Reacting to the news, Jesus said: “It will be an honour to wear the City number nine shirt and I’ll do so with great pride.

“I hope to score many goals wearing this jersey and help City to more trophies in the coming seasons.

“It’s the number I wear with Brazil and as always, I’ll be giving everything for City when I’m wearing it.”

City confirmed in a club statement that announcements on other squad numbers will be released at a later date.
