Dan James asked for and got a staggering £67,000 a week to leave Swansea and become Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first signing.

Manchester United are also poised to offer No 1 goalkeeper David De Gea £350,000-a-week to sign a new deal.

Henderson, 22, wants a sign of commitment from the club that he joined from Carlisle United eight years ago.

He was guilty of a howler in Friday night’s 4 – 2 defeat that saw the Young Lions dumped out of the European under 21 championships.

Yet the EFL golden glove holder saved a penalty the game before in the 2 – 1 loss to France.

England boss Gareth Southgate delayed his progress to the full side until this summer’s failed under 21 bid in Italy.

Southgate is already understood to see him as a potential rival for current No 1 Jordan Pickford even if he has yet to play in the Premier League.

Henderson is likely to do that on loan with Sheffield United in the forthcoming season after playing a crucial part in helping the Blades to automatic promotion.

He has yet to make an appearance of any kind for United having also been on loan at Stockport County, Grimsby and Shrewsbury.

That would change if De Gea rejects United’s improved offer to stay for he has long been tipped as the club’s future No 1.

Henderson has a year left on his current £25,000 per week deal and United have a further 12 – month option.

He sees his long – term future at United and any approach from interested clubs – Norwich City being one – would be rejected by his club.

But he also wants his progress to be reflected in his pay packet.

And he believes he has earned more than parity with new arrival James, 21.
