He is one of the country’s most successful youth coaches and was in charge of Chelsea’s Under-18s when they became the first team to win back to back FA Youth Cups since the Busby Babes.

But next season he will work with the first team squad as Lampard bids to ensure the west Londoners do not suffer too much from the transfer ban FIFA have imposed on them for breaking rules over the signings of youth players from overseas.

As a result, Chelsea have been barred from signing players in the next two windows, meaning new boss Lampard will be forced to blood youngsters from the Blues academy in the first team.

So he has promoted Edwards to work alongside his No2 Jody Morris. The pair spent more than a decade working together in the academy before Morris jumped ship to become Lampard’s assistant at Derby last season.

Now returning to Chelsea, Lampard wants to draw on all Morris and Edwards’ youth development experience to ensure the youngsters given a chance do not let themselves or the club down.

Lampard knows more about Chelsea’s academy than his two lieutenants.

It is reckoned they have worked with every Blues youth player in the last 10 years or so.
