Lionel Messi slams ‘corrupt’ referees after being sent off for headbutt in fiery Argentina against Chile in Copa America

LIONEL MESSI slammed Copa America's 'corrupt' referees after being red-carded for a headbutt in Argentina's third-place play-off against Chile.

The Barcelona star refused to attend the medal presentation and said his 2014 World Cup finalists had been treated unfairly despite winning the match 2-1.

Messi was dismissed in the first half after an alleged headbutt on Chile's former Cardiff midfielder Gary Medel.

Putting his absence down to a protest at the refereeing he said “we shouldn’t take part in this corruption.”

Messi added: "There was lack of respect toward us during this Copa America.

"We could have done better, but they didn’t let us make it to the final.

"Corruption and the referees are not letting the fans enjoy football. This is ruining football.

"We could have gone further but we weren't allowed into the final. Corruption, referees and all the rest stopped people from enjoying the football.

"I always tell the truth and I'm honest, that is what keeps me calm if what I say has repercussions that is not my business."

Medel was also sent off in the incident.

The Argentine great had already voiced his discontent at the standard of refereeing at this year's tournament and pointed the finger at hosts Brazil, who beat them in the semi-final.

He said: “Maybe what I said last time played a part today.

Meanwhile, Copa America chiefs hit back at his outburst.

Their statement read: "It's unacceptable that because of incidents proper to the competitions, where 12 Nations competed in, all in equal condition, there have been unfounded accusations that misrepresent the truth and put to judgement the integrity of Copa America."

Brazil face Peru in the final.

The 32-year-old is facing a ban for his controversial comments, but he said: “The truth needed to be told.”

First-half goals from Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero and Paulo Dybala sealed victory for Argentina.

Messi set up one of the goals before his 37th-minute dismissal.

Messi's Barca team-mate Arturo Vidal replied for Chile with a penalty just after half-time.
