WHO ARE THEY?

Accrington Stanley beat Marseille in pre-season friendly and claim they have ‘crashed Twitter’

ACCRINGTON STANLEY "crashed" Twitter last night after the League One side incredibly beat nine-time French champions Marseille.

The Ligue 1 side boasted World Cup winner Florian Thauvin and former West Ham superstar Dimitri Payet among their ranks.

But that was not enough to see off Stanley, whose goals from Sean McConville and Offrande Zanzala made Thauvin's late strike nothing but a consolation.

Marseille finished fifth in the French top flight last season.

McConville headed home in the 28th minute before Zanzala's penalty just nine minutes later. Former Newcastle star Thauvin scored his in the 77th minute.

Marseille, who are bossed by ex-Chelsea and Spurs manager Andre Villas-Boas, made ten changes for the second half but it was still not enough to reverse the score.

And Twitter lit up at full-time as news of the seemingly impossible filtered through.

One fan mocked the visitors with the tweet: "Marseille? Who are they?"

Another said: ";Announce Champions League."

And the banter had even started before kick-off.

One Twitter user posted a photo of a road sign outside the AJ Bell Stadium - where rugby posts had to be changed into goalposts before kick-off - which read: "Marseille? Who are they? Vs Accrington. AJ Bell at 6pm."

They wrote, "absolutely no words" next to three laughing emoji.
