Rui Patricio the hero for Wolves in Asia Trophy final shootout win over Man City

MANCHESTER CITY paid the penalty as they allowed the Premier League Asia Trophy to slip through their fingers on a sweltering night in Shanghai.

Raheem Sterling skied a first half spot kick as neither the champions nor Wolves managed to make a breakthrough.

Then in the shoot out Ilkay Gundogan, David Silva and Lukas Nmecha all saw their pens saved by Rui Patricio.

And it gives Nuno Espirito Santo’s Wolves a boost with their season due to start properly this week.
With Kevin de Bruyne pulling the strings in midfield, City began brightly with the Belgian teeing up Sterling whose finish was weak.

The former Chelsea man then linked up with Sterling again to find Leroy Sane but the German was also unable to provide the opener.

Their best chance came on 20 minutes when a ball over the top from Aymeric Laporte put in Sane but he was bundled over by Adama Traore.

Sterling - who scored the decisive penalty in the Carabao Cup final shoot-out - took responsibility and looked confident but skied his spot-kick high over the angle.

Wolves start their season on Thursday with a Europa League qualifier against Crusaders - and took a while to get going here.
