Man Utd transfer target Bruno Fernandes in tears after he captains Sporting Lisbon to horror 5-0 defeat to bitter rivals Benfica

MANCHESTER UNITED and Tottenham target Bruno Fernandes was in tears again after Sporting Lisbon's 5-0 thrashing to Benfica.

The £63million-rated midfielder, 24, skippered his club in the Portuguese Super Cup — but they were hammered by the Bruno Lage's side as he had objects thrown in his direction.

Even worse, it could be his last game for Marcel Keizer's side.

After the game, Sporting fans booed the outgoing star, where he put his hand over his face and sobbed in the centre of the pitch.

Fernandes was even booked himself and bickered with the referee over the decision and impressed nobody after Sporting claimed he was worth nearly double what the Premier League teams reckon.

During an ill-tempered game, the first goal did not hit the back of the net until the 40th minute, through Rafa Silva's strike, but it was the start of a landslide.

Silva, the opening scorer, then reversed roles with midfielder Pizzi to turn provider for the second.

The pair repeated the act after 75 minutes, after Alex Grimaldo had scored Benfica's three, and sub Chiquinho added a fifth on 90 minutes.

Ivorian midfielder Idrissa Doumbia compounded Sporting's misery as he got sent off for a second bookable offence in the last minute.

Fernandes appeared to be on his way last week as he burst into tears on the bench and then on the pitch at the Jose Alvalade.

Manchester United have been looking at signing Fernandes from Sporting throughout the transfer window, but their interest appears to have cooled.

United have put more effort into a transfer exchange with Juventus for Romelu Lukaku and Paulo Dybala, however, the Argentinian is not interested in joining them.

Spurs are also reported to be interested, but they are closer to signing Real Betis' £55million Giovani Lo Celso.
