MARCO ASENSIO is set to miss the entire 2019/20 season with the serious knee injury he picked up against Arsenal.
A fairly innocuous looking fall was revealed to have big consequences when Real Madrid diagnosed the winger with a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament (ACL).
Doctors have been waiting for the swelling to go down around his knee before carrying out the necessary operation.
According to MARCA, that will take place next week.
From there, Asensio can hope to be back in action in seven months time at the very earliest with recovery periods for this sort of injury often stretching to nine months.
That will wipe out the Spaniard's participation for Madrid this season, in a huge blow to club and player.
Asensio has long been a favourite of coach Zinedine Zidane's and was set for a starring role alongside new signing Eden Hazard in attack.
But a tangle with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in July's Washington DC friendly left him in agony.

Asensio's partner Sandra posted a heartfelt message online after the injury: “My beautiful love, you are strong and unstoppable, I will always be with you, we will celebrate good times together and face bad times together."
The debate over who will take the midfielder's place in Zidane's squad is already underway in the Spanish capital.
Zidane asserted at the time that it would not affect his plans to sell Gareth Bale, which have since been blocked by the club, with James Rodriguez another option to come in from the cold.
