N’Golo Kante gives Chelsea another injury scare as Lampard reveals midfielder picked up new issue in Man Utd drubbing

N'GOLO KANTE has given Chelsea a fresh injury scare, with Frank Lampard revealing his star midfielder picked up a new issue against Manchester United.

The French star, 28, started on the bench for the 4-0 hammering at Old Trafford, but came on to the pitch with 20 minutes to play.

Lampard has now claimed Kante picked up yet another knock in his brief cameo - just a day before the Super Cup clash with Liverpool.

The Chelsea chief said: “Kante was purely [on the bench] because he had an injury. I am very aware of how important he is.

“He picked up another small injury in the game, so we are assessing that."

Kante - who was seen training in Istanbul with the Chelsea squad on Tuesday - has struggled with hamstring and knee injuries since the end of last season.

MOUNT-ING A COMEBACK

He was risked for the Europa League final, but has struggled all summer and during pre-season on the back of it.

Now, new Blues boss Lampard went on to say he will continue with Mason Mount - who started the Old Trafford hammering - as he "deserves his chance on merit".

Lampard, keen to focus on youth as part of his Chelsea revolution, said: “I pick the best team to win the game, regardless of age.

"Mount deserves his chance on merit, I won’t fear to play young players.

“In terms of how we set up, I really liked some of our aggressive off-the-ball work.

"We have to be adaptable and respect the strengths of our opponents."

Lampard did, however, reveal he won't stubbornly stick with the same methods for the Liverpool game, adding: “There may be subtle changes of our approach.”
