Real Madrid and Barcelona were rumoured to be the most likely destination for the 26-year-old.

But according to , despite United prepared to listen to offers that matched their valuation, neither Spanish club were "serious" about signing him.

Real Madrid went and spent £89m on Chelsea star Eden Hazard, while Barcelona were constantly linked with bringing Neymar back to the Nou Camp.

Those deals seemed priority, and Pogba remained in the Premier League.

And Neymar as we now know, is staying at PSG - for now.

ZIDANE'S POGBA 'LOVE-IN'

Real Madrid seemed the most likely destination with the manager there, Zinedine Zidane, openly courting his countryman.

He said: "I know him personally. He brings so much and there are few players who bring as much as he does.”

Then in another interview, Zidane said: “Pogba? I always answer the same thing, I will look stupid.

“The club knows what we want, there’s still time. Today, we are focused on matches, let’s see what happens.”

But nothing materialised, with reports in Spain suggesting it left Zidane furious.
