After 22 years in the game, the Cameroonian represented his country at four World Cups, netting 56 goals in 118 appearances.

He became Cameroon's all-time scorer, the Africa Cup of Nations' all-time top scorer and a four-time African Player of the Year, a record shared with former Manchester City star Yaya Toure.

Added to that, he also has an Olympic gold medal in his bulging trophy cabinet.

However, he has now decided to hang up his boots.

Posting on his official Instagram page, Eto'o wrote: "The end. Towards a new challenge.

"Thank you all, big love."

After blazing a trail at Mallorca, Eto'o earned a dream switch to the Nou Camp in 2004 where he lifted two Champions League, four La Liga titles, two Supercopa de Espana trophies and a Copa del Rey.

During a five-year spell with the Catalan giants, his scoring record was exceptional, netting 108 times in 144 outings.

A move to Inter Milan popped up where he won Europe's biggest prize for the third time and the treble under the guidance of Jose Mourinho in the 2009/10 season.

That achievement meant he became the only player in history to win the treble in consecutive seasons with two different teams.

Eto'o also got the opportunity to play in the Premier League, turning out for Chelsea and Everton.
