Man Utd ‘set to try and convince Pogba to stay with bumper new deal’ despite Madrid interest
PAUL POGBA is reportedly set to be offered an improved contract to convince him to stay at Manchester United.
The French World Cup winner looked destined to leave Old Trafford over the summer after revealing he wanted a new challenge.
That resulted in interest from Real Madrid, with the 26-year-old believed to be intent on linking up with Zinedine Zidane’s Galacticos.
However, no bid arrived and with the transfer window now shut, the Red Devils are keen to tie the star down to a new deal.
He enters the final year of his contract at the end of the season, although United do retain an option of an additional 12-months.
Now the are claiming Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side are unwilling to risk letting their £89m club-record signing move within a year of becoming a free agent.
And they will go all out to tempt him to commit his future to the club by offering him a significant pay rise.
But they may face a big fight in persuading him to stay after both Pogba’s agent Mino Raiola and his brother Mathias recently casting doubt over his United future.
The latter claimed earlier this week that it is common knowledge Madrid boss Zidane is a big fan of his sibling.
Mathias, a player for Spanish four tier outfit Manchego, said to Radio Marca: “Zidane wanted players, he didn't get them, but I have no doubt that he's going to do the work he needs to do in order to get the team back to the level he wants.
“I like Zidane and he likes my brother - everyone knows it.”
Raiola tried his best to instigate a summer exit for his client.
And he said: “Everyone knows the willingness of Paul to move on. We are in the process of that.
“Everyone knows what the feelings of Paul are.”
