MANCHESTER UNITED fans are furious after hearing that Jesse Lingard is reportedly on the verge of a new contract.
The English midfielder, 26, has not scored or assisted for EIGHT MONTHS and supporters are questioning why he should be rewarded with an improved deal.
Reports of a new package for Lingard being a priority - as well as for youngster Mason Greenwood - emerged following extensions for David De Gea and Victor Lindelof.
He is currently halfway through a four-year deal worth around £100,000 a week which he signed in 2017, but there is the option to exercise an additional 12 months.
But plenty of United fans took to Twitter to share their sheer exasperation - with some calling on the club to splash the cash on someone like Jadon Sancho instead.
One fumed: "Why are United offering Lingard a new contract?? He’s absolutely useless yet keeps getting a pay rise every few years.......we’ve no chance of improving whilst we keep this deadwood."
He then continued: "Sancho value- £100 million+, Zaha value- £90-100 million+, Rice value- £70-90 million, Lingard value- £15-20 million. How the f*** is this guy getting ANOTHER new contract??"
A third wrote: "I hope you do not renew Jesse Lingard's contract, he is not eligible to be extended, he must be sold, he is a virus in the team."
Another said: "If Lingard gets a new contract I’ll be done with this board officially. Hasn’t done anything to warrant it so ask why?!"
Meanwhile, one user joked: "You just know lingard’s new contract is coming soon loooool can’t wait to see how rattled people get x"
And a final person added: "Mahrez has a goal and an assist tonight yet he's a benched player for city who'll walk into any EPL team except Liverpool but manutd is making the contract renewal of Lingard a priority."
Lingard was undoubtedly one of the best players in the Jose Mourinho era at Old Trafford and raised his game during the Portguese's tenure.

But his last goal came on January 25 as United beat Arsenal 3-1 in the FA Cup. Four days later, he grabbed a crucial assist as the Red Devils fought back to draw 2-2 with Burnley.
All four of his Premier League goals and the other two assists last season came in the month of December - although he did bag against AC Milan in pre-season - and fans even celebrated when he was ruled out of the clash with Leicester last weekend.
As revealed by SunSport, manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has spoken with him and close pal Marcus Rashford to ensure they keep their focus on football - with Lingard launching his own JLINGZ brand selling fashion and aftershave.
