It’s a myth Chelsea boss Lampard was ‘a success’ during time at Derby, challenges ex-Liverpool star McAteer

FORMER Liverpool star Jason McAteer has insisted that Frank Lampard was not a success during his stint with Derby.

The 41-year-old took charge of the Rams in May 2018 in what was his first managerial role - leading them to the Championship play-off final in his only season at Pride Park.

However he couldn't guide Derby to Premier League football as Aston Villa beat them 2-1 at Wembley - before Chelsea quickly snapped him up after parting ways with Maurizio Sarri.

Of the 57 games Lampard was in charge of Derby, he won 27, drew 17 and lost 16 - giving him a win percentage of just over 42 per cent.

Notable victories include beating Manchester United on penalties in the Carabao Cup and knocking Southampton out of the FA Cup.

While the 4-3 aggregate win against Leeds in the play-off semi-final will live long in the memories of Derby fans.

But McAteer - who appeared in the league 100 times for Liverpool between 1995-1999 - is of the opinion that he was a failure at Pride Park.

He stated that because of the funds that were at his disposal, he simply had to bring Derby back to the top-flight.

Speaking of Lampard on LFCTV, McAteer, 48, said: ";He only had one season as Derby manager, would you say he was a success?

"Probably not because he had a pretty decent budget and the aim was to get them up, and he didn't do that.”

Lampard is currently preparing for the Blues' upcoming clash against the Reds at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, as Chelsea look to get back to winning ways after their shock 1-0 loss against Valencia in the Champions League.

The West London side sit in sixth spot in the Premier League table after five games played having picked up just eight points.
