Liverpool aiming to break record for most consecutive Premier League wins after Chelsea victory – but will need to beat Spurs and Man Utd first
RELENTLESS Liverpool are aiming to set a new Premier League record for the longest winning streak after overcoming Chelsea on Sunday.
The 2-1 win extended the Reds' incredible 2019 run to 15 consecutive victories in the Premier League.
Liverpool's first-half double through Trent Alexander-Arnold's beauty and a header from the unmarked Roberto Firmino was enough to secure the Reds a priceless 15th straight win in their quest for title glory.
Nine of these wins came at the back end of last season - but astonishingly still didn't land the Merseyside men their first league title since 1990.
The last time Jurgen Klopp's side failed to pick up all three points in a league match was all the way back in early March when Marco Silva's Everton battled to the goalless draw at Goodison that ultimately cost their bitter rivals title glory.
Liverpool won all of their remaining matches - but it wasn't enough as Man City were on a tear of their own.
Pep Guardiola's team won their last 14 matches of the campaign to seal back-to-back title wins.
City's 5-0 battering of West Ham on the opening day extended that winning run to 15 - meaning that they currently hold the joint second longest win streak in Prem history, as well as the outright record.
The Anfield side equalled that run against Chelsea on Sunday - but will have to win a further three matches if they are to beat City's overall record.
The Citizens won a remarkable 18 matches in a row in the first half of the 2017-18 season, scoring 58 goals in the process.
Their run was eventually halted by a 0-0 draw at Crystal Palace - but no-one could stop them marching on to one of the most dominant league titles in Premier League history.
To beat City's record, the Reds will have to triumph at Sheffield United on Saturday, before then facing former manager Brendan Rodgers when he takes his Leicester team to Anfield the following weekend.
They then face a tricky trip to fierce rivals Manchester United before hosting Spurs in the match that could seal a historic 19th win on the bounce.
Before Man City's unbelievable 18 win haul in 2017, Arsene Wenger's Arsenal had held the record of 14 for 15 years after finishing the 2001-02 season on a tear that included North London derby glory - as well as a 1-0 win at Old Trafford.
