Harry Kane and the other players with the most Star Man awards this season

Is there a better feeling than checking your Dream Team and seeing several of your players have been named as Star Man?

As you probably know, the player with the highest rating at the end of each Dream Team eligible game is awarded five additional points.

Our ratings are provided by WhoScored, who use a clever stats-based algorithm to cast an objective judgement.

It goes without saying that you want to include as many players as possible in your Dream Team who are regularly identified as the standout performer among the 22+ involved in a given fixture.

So who are the frequent Star Man winners in 2020/21?

Predictably, overall top points scorer Harry Kane (£7.8m) leads the way with six Star Man awards in all competitions.

Just over 21% of the Spurs forward's mammoth 141 points tally have come from Star Man points.

What's interesting is that Kane's success may be partially hindering his primary accomplice, Son Heung-min (£5.2m).

Take a look at this comparison between the two, with Kane's stats on the left and Son's on the right.

Despite being one of the very best players in Europe this season, the South Korea international only has one Star Man award to his name — and he had to score a hat-trick to get that!

The problem for Son (if problem is the right word) is that his partner has been playing so well and greedily hoovering up the Star Man awards for himself.

This is perhaps why Son's points tally of 87, while very high, is slightly lower than what we would expect of someone in such exceptional form.

And it's the fact that only one of them can be named Star Man in each fixture that may be causing some reluctance among Dream Team bosses to include both in their forward line.

Son appears in 18.4% of teams which, again, feels lower than his performances would normally justify.

MOST DREAM TEAM STAR MAN AWARDS THIS SEASON:

  1. Harry Kane (£7.8m) - 6 Star Man awards
  2. Sadio Mane (£7.0m) - 5
  3. Nick Pope (£2.7m) - 3
  4. Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£4.1m) - 3
  5. Marcus Rashford (£5.6m) - 3
  6. Bruno Fernandes (£5.3m) -3
  7. Timo Werner (£5.0m) - 3

Credit to Burnley's keeper for matching Calvert-Lewin's tally given how badly the Clarets have started this campaign.

Rashford's inclusion reinforces the feast-or-famine nature of the boy wonder's performances — when he does well he goes big but if it's not clicking for him then he rarely even musters a 7+ rating.

It may come as a surprise that Mane has five Star Man awards while Mohamed Salah (£6.8m) has only been recognised in this manner once, and that was in the defending champions' opening game of the season against Leeds.

As with Son and Kane, the Liverpool pair are forced to squabble over Star Man when it's often the case that both would be worthy.

Keep an eye on the Star Man charts as the season progresses.
