Ivan Toney’s masterclass against Wolves came after his Dream Team ownership had more than halved

BRENTFORD have held their own and then some during their first weeks as a Premier League team.

After a memorable win against Arsenal in the campaign's curtain-raiser, the Bees have drawn twice, lost just once (to Brighton), and beaten Wolves.

Thomas Frank's side had to fight hard for the three points at Molineux on Saturday, conceding 62% possession and playing the last half an hour with ten men after Shandon Baptiste was shown a second yellow card.

While an impressive defensive display ultimately secured the points, it was an inspired spell from Ivan Toney (£2.8m) that made the difference.

The 25-year-old caused havoc for Conor Coady (£2.7m) and co throughout the first half, converting a penalty he earned himself in the 28th minute before providing an assist for Bryan Mbeumo (£1.5m) six minutes later.

Combining physicality with a composed technique, the Championship's top scorer last season put on a masterclass in centre-forward play which earned him 15 Dream Team points after pouching a thoroughly deserved Star Man award.

Toney more than doubled his total points tally at the weekend, moving him onto 28 overall.

At the time of writing, he's got more points than Sadio Mane (£5.3m), Jamie Vardy (£4.2m), Diogo Jota (£4.3m), Mason Greenwood (£4.2m) and several other high-profile forwards.

It's early days but two goals and an assist from five games is a promising start for a striker making the leap from the second tier to the top flight.

Toney's success has not come as total surprise.

Before the season got underway, his ownership was above 10% as plenty of Dream Team bosses thought his 33-goal Championship campaign would translate to Premier League joy - like a supercharged Patrick Bamford (£3.9m).

However, after he mustered just three points from the first two Game Weeks, Toney's popularity more than halved - it's currently sitting at 3.2%.

Those who kept faith have been handsomely rewarded since - he's added 25 points in his last three outings.

While it seems like gaffers should be pivoting back to Toney, the schedule gives cause to think twice.

After a Carabao Cup game against Oldham on Tuesday, Brentford face Liverpool, West Ham, Chelsea and Leicester in their next four league games.

Still, Toney's performance against Wolves is difficult to forget.
