ONE of Germany's proudest tournament records went up in smoke - but they still managed to find a way to win a penalty shootout despite missing THREE times against Italy.
Thomas Muller still finds the net illusive in Euro championships after side-footing a tame effort which was well saved by Gianluigi Buffon, ending a 24-year old scoring run from the spot.
And when Mesut Ozil smashed against the post, it looked like the Germans were finally going to lose their crown as penalty kings.
But Graziano Pelle and Leonardo Bonucci were both unsuccessful to send the shootout to sudden death - with Manchester United star Matteo Darmian the unlucky Italian to have his effort saved and give Germany a 6-5 win.
The Germans had not missed a single penalty in a shootout since 1982 in major tournaments - when Uli Stielike was unsuccessful in the World Cup semi-final against France.
They won that one to, of course.
And despite missing three here, they still found a way to drag themselves into a semi-final against France or Iceland.
