Gary Cahill vows to fight for England place under Sam Allardyce despite Iceland Euro 2016 embarrassment
Chelsea defender wants to put shock exit to minnows behind him and impress new Three Lions boss Big Sam
GARY CAHILL has vowed to fight for his England future under Sam Allardyce.
The Chelsea defender was in the Three Lions squad that crashed out to Iceland in the last 16 of the Euros.
But he now wants to put that behind him and impress his new boss.
He said: “I’m excited to be working under Sam. I’m looking to impress him at the start of the season and looking to impress him, if I’m fortunate enough to be involved in the squad.
“I’m looking to keep involved and keep that shirt. I’m very passionate to play for my country.
“His appointment is an exciting one for us. It’s going to be a change. It’s going to be interesting to work under him and have his ideas and take them on board.
“It’s down to me to impress him and make sure I hit the ground running so that I am in the squad when he selects them.”
Cahill has never played for Allardyce at Bolton. The defender joined the club in 2008 – one year after Big Sam departed to take the Newcastle job.
And the Chelsea ace – signed from Bolton in 2012 – added: “I am excited to get back to the season to try and be a part of his plans. I’m ready for us to buy into his ideas now.”
