WAYNE ROONEY has been left out of Manchester United’s squad for Sunday’s clash with Chelsea.

The Old Trafford skipper did not travel with the first-team squad to prepare for boss Jose Mourinho’s first game back at Stamford Bridge since being axed last year.

United sources claim that Rooney has a “minor muscular injury” — but there is mystery about the seriousness of the problem.

Despite struggling for form, Rooney started United’s 4-1 Europa League win over Fenerbahce on Thursday.

Chelsea is a massive game for Mourinho — but he opted to leave Rooney at home after talks with the striker, 30.

Rooney has not scored for United in ten appearances and has lost his starting spot under the Special One.

He was also dropped for England’s 0-0 draw in Slovenia this month.

His last goal for United was in the 3-1 win at Bournemouth back on August 14.
