But against the run of play, ex-Everton striker Victor Anichebe equalised to score his first goal for the Black Cats in front of 1,200 noisy away fans, rifling into the roof of the net after turning Simon Francis inside the box.

David Moyes' strugglers made life more difficult for themselves on 59 minutes when South African midfielder Steven Pienaar was shown a second yellow for a crude foul on Junior Stanislas.

Stanislas hit the post moments later as Bournemouth banged on the door, but Sunderland took the lead when Anichebe was brought down by Smith - and Jermain Defore made no mistake.

Jordan Pickford in the Sunderland net made a big save from a Josh King volley - who could get a retrospective ban after an unseen stamp on Anichebe as the Black Cats hung on for the win.

FACTS, STATS, GOALS & LOLS

  • DAVID MOYES was serving a one-match touchline ban after being sent-off for swearing at the fourth official at West Ham. Maybe he should sit in the stands every week.
  • THE visitors went for a little and large combination up front with Jermain Defoe and Victor Anichebe. And when we say large, we mean bloody huge.
  • DAN GOSLING’s 10th minute goal means Sunderland have still to keep a clean sheet in the Premier League this season. Hardly a surprise when your defenders look as though they have never met before.

  • IT wasn’t the first time Gosling had upset Moyes. The midfielder infuriated his former Everton boss when he announced he was quitting Goodison Park as a free agent back in 2010.
  • ANICHEBE’s stunning 33rd minute equaliser was his first goal since May, 2015. No wonder the Nigerian international striker looked so surprised when his shot beat Artur Boruc.
  • ENGLAND assistant-manager Sammy Lee was at the Vitality to check on Jack Wilshere ahead of Gareth Southgate’s squad announcement tomorrow evening. The on-loan Arsenal midfielder was busy but didn’t run the game.

  • NO surprise when Jordan Ibe was replaced by Benik Afobe at half-time. The Bournemouth winger has been subbed in every game since his £15million summer move from Liverpool.

  • STEVEN PIENAAR could have no complaints about his 59th minute dismissal. He had already been booked for tripping Wilshere and was lucky not to get a straight red for his over-the-ball challenge on Junior Stanislas.
  • THE instant ref Mike Dean pointed to the spot for Adam Smith's foul on Anichebe, there was never any doubt that Jermain Defoe was going to score - a true Premier League scoring legend.

WHAT THEY SAID

Jermain Defoe: "Week by week I feel like we’ve improved. It was just a case of luck to be honest. The energy levels were unbelievable, exactly what the manager wanted.

"Great team spirit, it’s been difficult but to show that type of character when it’s been so hard is a credit to the boys. A great performance."

Victor Anichebe: "I think you could see how much it meant to us and the fans. We’ve been getting bad results for so long and we feel like we’ve haven’t had the luck.

"Even when we went down to ten men you saw that we didn’t sulk we just grinded. You saw Jermain getting back, me back at left-back.

"In the first half I cracked my rib. I couldn’t even move properly but we did this today for the manger."
