That sinking feeling

Rory McIlroy heckler makes $100 off Justin Rose by holing putt world No 3 couldn’t after being invited onto green

Team Europe star was victim of good-hearted abuse from America supporter, so he got him to show his skills

RORY McILROY was heckled by an American fan so he got him to hit a putt... only for him to hole it in front of everyone!

McIlroy was playing a practise round with Henrik Stenson and Justin Rose when he got some ribbing from the crowd.

So, Open champions Stenson invited the loudmouth onto one of Hazeltine's greens to have a go for himself.

Up stepped David Johnson and, looking like a pro himself bar the jeans and slipper-style shoes, he rammed the ten-foot putt in the hole first time.

That was the same shot, by the way, that world No 3 McIlroy and playing partner for today's opening foursomes Andy Sullivan repeatedly missed.

The patriotic crowd went nuts as the putt dropped and the spectator celebrated like he had won the Ryder Cup proper.

Olympic champ Rose had put down $100 for the man to hole it.

Johnson said afterwards: "I razzed them a little bit and they heard me, which was insane.

"I closed my eyes, swallowed my puke and hit the putt. It happened to go in.

McIlroy, however, did show he still can be pretty useful on the links.

His stunning par-five eagle hole-out at the Tour Championship last week helped him seal a £9million payday.

And he did the same on Hazeltine's par-five sixth today, knocking in a wedge from 100 yards pretty much on the fly.

He may have to apologise to the greenkeepers after that one.
