WETHERBY OPTION

Plan B for Coneygree

Sara Bradstock had confirmed yesterday that he would not be entered but they have gone back on their decision and given him an entry "just in case"

CONEYGREE was the surprise name among 11 contenders for the bet365 Charlie Hall Chase at Wetherby on Saturday.

Assistant trainer Sara Bradstock had said on Sunday the 2015 Cheltenham Gold Cup winner would not be given an entry in the Grade Two contest on account of the quick ground.

"It is very much a 'just-in-case' entry," she said.

"I told the owners a while ago he'd have the option so that's what he's got, we'd look silly if it did rain.

"It's very much plan B at this stage, though, as it's only three weeks before Haydock (Betfair Chase) and that is plan A.

"I suspect now we'll just have to have a gallop somewhere where it's nice ground.

"He's done plenty of work, but when they've been off a year they need to have worked on grass before a race and he hasn't been able to yet.

"The trouble is once it starts raining, it probably won't stop.

"I'm prepared to do a rain dance."

Last year's winner Cue Card was at the weekend confirmed as on target for the race by trainer Colin Tizzard.

Philip Hobbs has also stated for some time it will be the starting point for Menorah, winner of the race in 2014. Hobbs has also entered Sausalito Sunrise.

Nigel Twiston-Davies is similarly keen to run RSA Chase hero Blaklion, winner of the Towton Novices' Chase at the track last season.

David Pipe's Dynaste, second last year, the Rebecca Curtis-trained Irish Cavalier and the Paul Nicholls duo of Saphir Du Rheu and Virak are also engaged.
