Haydock a possibility
Nicky Henderson's seven-year-old was caught in the final strides at Cheltenham in the Relkeel Hurdle but connections are keen to keep him over hurdles for the time being
HAYDOCK's Stanjames.com Champion Hurdle Trial on January 21 has emerged as the next likely port of call for L'Ami Serge.
Nicky Henderson's seven-year-old reverted to hurdles for the Relkeel Hurdle on New Year's Day and looked all over subsequent winner Agrapart halfway up the run-in, only to be caught in the dying strides.
Fourth to Douvan in the Supreme Novices' Hurdle in 2015 and third in the JLT Novices' Chase last season, L'Ami Serge looks like staying over hurdles for the immediate future.
"The feeling is he seemed to enjoy being back over hurdles," said Anthony Bromley, racing manager to owners Simon Munir and Isaac Souede.
"He did everything right bar win at Cheltenham and I think the idea is to stay over hurdles.
"Possibly he could go for the Champion Hurdle Trial at Haydock which is only three weeks away but could fit in nicely before the National Spirit at Fontwell.
"He's versatile, trip-wise, and I just think he doesn't need to be in front too soon.
"Those are our thoughts, but obviously Nicky needs to be happy with him in the meantime.
"It was nice to see him go with relish after his first run over fences this season.
"I don't think he wants to be going further than two and a half miles, but he goes in heavy ground, which is why Haydock could be possible."
