Newbury and Ayr both come under the spotlight as Templegate tries to find a host of winners on a busy Saturday

IT’S Term time.

MIDTERM was sent off hot favourite for the Dante at York last spring. He didn’t get much of a run that day and wasn’t seen again until his neck second in a French Group 2 in September.

Sir Michael Stoute’s superbly-bred colt should do well this season and he’s unexposed over today’s distance.

I’m expecting Dal Harraild to also do well this season but he might need a bit further. If he gets left alone in front he might be able to get first run on his rivals but I’m expecting Midterm to sit on his tail and pounce in good time.

Muntahaa got racing too soon when third behind Chemical Charge at Doncaster three weeks ago. That should have sharpened him up but he’s likely to need softer ground.

Crimean Tatar bolted up on his debut and he again looked good when beating Chemical Charge on Kempton’s all-weather in November. He’s the one I fear most.

BE Kind in the Dubai Duty Free Stakes.

QUEEN KINDLY showed a great turn of foot to mow down Roly Poly in York’s Lowther Stakes last summer when Fair Eva was back in third. Her disappointing show in the Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes looked one run too many and the step up to seven furlongs should suit.

I’m expecting Queen Kindly to have too much pace for Dabyah. John Gosden’s filly won her first two starts over seven furlongs but she ran her best race when a length third in a French Group 1. There’s no doubting her class but I expect she will come into her own over further this year.

Promising failed to win a maiden last season but she was beaten a neck when runner-up in a Group 3 at Goodwood on her final start. The winner didn’t do much for the form and there’s no doubt Richard Hannon’s hope has got to step up.

I liked the way Glitter Girl progressed last year and she should be in with a shout of a place.

HOM is where my heart is in the JLT Greenham Stakes.

Sir Michael Stoute’s ZAINHOM won a York maiden on his second start last season and he was a little unlucky not to finish closer to Best Solution when runner-up in a Newmarket Group 3 in October.

He didn’t get the clearest of runs when trying to close from the rear – something that’s not easy to do on the Rowley Mile. I’m confident he will be significantly better this year and he should put his experience to good use against a couple of maiden winners.

Frankel’s son Dream Castle is bred to be very good and the early signs are certainly promising. He bolted up on his debut at Doncaster three weeks ago. The opposition will be much stiffer this time and his inexperience counts against him.

That’s also the worry for Barney Roy. He was impressive at Haydock on his only start last season but this will tell us how good he is.

Aidan O’Brien’s War Secretary – a dual all-weather winner – probably needs to step up.

I’M a Chelsea fan in the Be Wiser Spring Cup.

CHELSEA LAD has only had three starts but he has shown plenty of class. He also showed a great attitude to come out best in a rough race at Newmarket last May.

Runner-up Barleysugar went close in a Grade 3 when switched to race in America so the form looks strong.

Trainer Martyn Meade won the Craven on Thursday and he’s booked Ryan Moore for the ride.

El Hayem is interesting. He has been gelded over the winter and he’s better than he showed in a couple of handicaps last summer.

Donncha was only beaten half a length when third in the Lincoln three weeks ago. He needs everything to drop right and keeps climbing the weights without winning.

Banksea went close on his return to action 12 months ago and couldn’t be ruled out.

In-form George William and Fastnet Tempest are others to keep an eye on.

TURN to Pege in the Coral Scottish National.

Paul Nicholls won this contest 12 months ago with Vicente and ARPEGE D’ALENE has a similar profile.

This useful novice has always shaped like a strong stayer and that certainly looked the case when he was fourth in the four-mile National Hunt Chase at Cheltenham when just behind Missed Approach.

His dislike to the water jump didn’t help him and there’s no doubt he’s got the class for a race like this.

He might be a bit tricky but his best efforts have come in big fields and he has form with the likes of Singlefarmpayment and Label Des Obeaux.

Nicholls also runs last year’s winner Vicente. He crashed out at the first in the Grand National but he’s back on the same handicap rating as when successful 12 months ago.

Southfield Royale has a race like this in him. Nothing has gone right for Neil Mulholland’s hope this season but he is dangerously well weighted.

Premier Bond ran a blinder to be third in the Kim Muir at Cheltenham. He looks sure to stay today’s longer trip and decent ground suits him well.

Vintage Clouds, Trustan Times and Battle Of Shiloh are others in with a shout in a wide-open race.
