John Gosden and Frankie Dettori strike again as Daban lands the Nell Gwyn Stakes at Newmarket

Having won the Feilden together yesterday with Khalidi, they took Wednesday's feature race as Daban powered home to land the Nell Gwyn Stakes

DABAN put herself in the 1000 Guineas frame with an impressive performance to win the Lanwades Stud Nell Gwyn Stakes at Newmarket.

Representing the formidable combination of trainer John Gosden and jockey Frankie Dettori, who won the race last year with Nathra, the filly was a 12-1 shot having won on her only previous start at Kempton last November.

Despite being keen for the early part of the race, Dettori kept enough in the tank and she finished with a flourish to get the better of Unforgetable Filly and Poet's Vanity.

Dettori said: "It is the first time I've ridden her. Her home work has been good.

"She travelled brilliantly, she showed a good turn of foot and she can only improve. It was only her second start. She showed a good attitude.

"John said she had a good turn of foot and if that if we were in reach at the dip, she'd find you another gear and she did.

"She can only improve. She has won her trial and she's entitled to give it (the 1000 Guineas) a go."

Gosden added: "I was expecting a good show from her. She's a sweet, lovely filly and is very relaxed at home.

"She does have that cruising speed and ability to quicken which is what a good thoroughbred has.

"She has quickened up well and she'll improve from that.

"She is in the Classic here and in France so we will talk to the owner about which way he wants to play it. We are thrilled to win a Group 3."
