Racing Tips – Top Tipster Steve Mullen’s best racing selections for Friday, May 12

Steve Mullen guides you through Friday's racing from Chester, Lingfield, Market Rasen, Nottingham, Ascot and Ripon

Chester racecourse

CHESTER

1.50

EL HAYEM has a handy low draw and should have enough zip to make the most of it. He came back from a long break to finish a close-up sixth in a big-field contest at Newbury last time. He was entitled to need that fitness-wise and should come on a bundle for the experience.

2.25

CLIFFS OF MOHER looks a few steps ahead of these rivals and can justify those who fancy him for the Derby by taking this. He scorched away with a Leopardstown maiden last time with the sort of performance that impressed even his illustrious connections. He could have a better draw but it’s not a massive field.

3.00

COPPER KNIGHT is a bit of a monkey but he loved his last visit to Chester when he lost his maiden tag over course and distance. After a few modest efforts he looked back to his best when finishing second on his comeback outing at Ripon 13 days ago. He goes off the same mark here and has a fair draw.

3.35

Although this is a distance race, many of the fancied horses have been handed a difficult draw including Midterm who is probably the pick but has to come from stall 12. WESTERN HYMN has no such problems from a low stall and the first-time cheekpieces should help too.

He was last seen winning a Listed contest on the all-weather but he’s held his own on turf too and the John Gosden horses are in good nick.

4.05

It’s probably a risk to tip a horse that missed the kick last time but GYMNASTE showed excellent zip to come from a way back at Newcastle. Hopefully lessons will have been learned from that and Frankie can have her closer to the pace. She should improve for that debut and won’t mind the drop in trip.

4.35

JUDICIAL relished the drop back to this distance when winning at Pontefract last time and the decent ground will be right up his street. He has winning form around here, which is another plus, and he is capable of a fast start from his good low draw.

5.05

CROQUEMBOUCHE blew away the cobwebs with a close-up second at Windsor last time out. He was coming back from seven months off there so it was an encouraging effort. He likes to go from the front, which never hurts around here.
