Racing Tips – Top Tipster Steve Mullen’s best racing selections for Saturday, May 27
Steve Mullen guides you through Saturday's racing from Chester, Goodwood, York, Cartmel, Haydock, Salisbury and Ffos Las
WE’RE fine and Dandy at Haydock today.
INDIAN DANDY is improving rapidly and can take another leap forward by winning Haydock’s Silver Bowl (2.55).
He ran on the all-weather this winter with excellent results, picking up wins at Lingfield on debut and then Chelmsford at handicap level.
Somehow, he was allowed to go off at 16-1 for his turf debut at Yarmouth last time out. He showed a high cruising speed before picking up well to run away from his rivals.
This is a step up in quality but he looks ready for it and a 6lb rise in the weights looks more than fair.
These three-year-old handicaps are usually full of progressive types and this race is no different. Graphite Storm went down in a driving finish in good company at Ascot last time out.
That showed his ability to handle a big field against 15 rivals and he was suited by the trip and fast ground. He wouldn’t have to improve much to have a big say in this.
If you’re looking for one at a really big price to hit the frame, Mailshot could be the answer. He had no chance from a wide draw at Chester last time and is still getting the hang of things on turf.
His all-weather form is strong though and he has been given some help by the handicapper, which could make all the difference.
DAL HARRAILD has been crying out for a marathon trip and finally gets it in York’s 2.40.
He comes here on the back of what, at first glance, looks a pretty modest effort in the John Porter Stakes at Newbury.
It was clear that he needed that comeback after around seven months off and he was beaten less than four lengths in a higher class than today’s race.
He signed off last season by running away with the Listed Godolphin Stakes at Newmarket. It looked a strong renewal with William Haggas’s stayer getting the better of a good battle with Barsanti.

That was over 1m4f and he gave the strong impression that longer trips — and maybe the big Cup races — would be the future.
He has no problem with fast ground and could be set for a big season.
Frontiersman looks the one they all have to beat. He was impressive when winning a Newmarket handicap on comeback 20 days ago.
That was over 1m4f and he didn’t seem to be stopping after picking up strongly inside the the final quarter-mile. This is a step up in grade from that but he looks ready for it.
Follow a sprinter in form is an old maxim but it can pay off with COPPER KNIGHT in York’s 3.50.
His two runs this season have been very impressive. Even when settling for second on his comeback at Ripon he clocked a fast time. That was left behind when he scorched home at Chester 12 days ago.
He flew out of the stalls and didn’t come close to being caught, which is some feat over the minimum trip. He had more than two lengths in hand crossing the line so an 8lb rise in the weights is fair enough.
A capable claimer takes almost half of that off today and he’s touched lucky with the draw again.
Maybe his young rider is putting the bookies off but it was a surprise to see him chalked up at a double-figure price after such an impressive display on the Roodee.
Out Do showed signs of coming back to something like his best when third at Ripon last time out.
He has tumbled down the weights and loves it at York. If he shows anything like his best he should be right there at the finish.
Gamesome has all the ability you need for a race like this but getting him to deliver is proving tricky. He again went well at Goodwood last time and is capable of hitting the frame at a big price.
WASHINGTON DC can land his second win of the season in a red-hot renewal of the Temple Stakes at Haydock (4.05).
Aidan O’Brien has tried this four-year-old at different trips but this 5f looks right up his street.
He put in an effort that was good enough to win this when a close second to Marsha in the Palace House Stakes at Newmarket last time out.
Ryan Moore was harshly accused of waiting too long to deliver their challenge there and Wayne Lordan might be a big closer to the pace here.
He’s more than held his own at the highest level and is being aimed at some of the biggest prizes at Royal Ascot next month.
This isn’t far off Group 1 standard and Quiet Reflection will have to be at her best to figure on her seasonal comeback.
It’s interesting to see her return over this distance given that most of her best form has come over 6f.
A bigger danger could be Priceless who went for home too soon when behind Washington DC at Newmarket. Timing her run better could pay dividends here.
