Racing Tips – Top Tipster Steve Mullen’s best racing selections for Thursday, July 20
Steve Mullen guides you through Thursday's racing from Chepstow, Hamilton, Leicester, Doncaster and Epsom
LEICESTER
2.10
CALIBRATION showed more than enough last season to win a race like this. His best effort came when second in a Windsor handicap over a mile, with this longer distance looking likely to suit well.
He’s back in a maiden here and the only possible negative is his nine months off the track. Providing he’s fit, he’ll be hard to beat.
2.45
MAJOR CORNWALLIS has shown some promise, including when a close-up fourth at Newbury last time out. That was over this distance and the race doesn’t look the deepest on paper.
3.15
MR TYRRELL caught the eye with a more than decent second at Chester last time out. He was beaten just over a length there and shapes as though the step up to a mile will help.
He looks on a fair mark for this handicap debut and wouldn’t have to improve much to win.
3.50
LIMELITE comes here in good form after a solid second on turf at Lingfield and a gutsy win at Newbury last time out. She’s up just 2lb for that success and is best over this distance.
Parlance looks the one to beat but she was below par at Newmarket last time and might need a mile to show her best.
4.20 - Mullen's star bet
VENTURA KNIGHT is a typical Mark Johnston performer in that you point him at the finishing line and just let him go.
He pulled off front-running tactics to score at Beverley before following up on his handicap debut at Carlisle last time. He can do the same here with similar results.
4.55
SURROUND SOUND has been nudged down by the handicapper despite a solid third at Doncaster last time out. He was doing his best work at the finish there so might benefit from being ridden a little closer to the pace.
Either way, this race looks a little weaker than his last assignment.
5.30
ONE TOO MANY has the benefit of one of the top apprentices around in Finley Marsh and that can make a big difference at this level.
She didn’t really get home on the soft ground at Doncaster last time and should be happier on this better surface. A mark of 64 looks more than fair too.
